Deadliest Catch - The Pilot EpisodeForty-foot waves, freezing temperatures and a nearly 100-percent injury rate. Crab fishing off the Alaskan coast on the icy Bering Sea is one of the world's most dangerous jobs. But it's also one of the most lucrative, offering tens of thousands of dollars for a few days' work. Follow one group of ambitious men as they battle harsh conditions and intense competition in the frenzied search for an undersea jackpot.
Deadliest Catch: Season 5 (5 DVD Set)Deadliest Catch takes you deep into the world of the Bering Sea --as we follow seven vessels and their crews through the most brutal fishing seasons on the planet - Red King Crab and Opilio Crab. Forty-foot waves, hurricane winds, sleep deprivation, and operating heavy machinery on a pitching deck, are just a few reasons the injury rate is one hundred percent. The rugged Adventurers who fish these waters are the real draw. Crabbers have the mindset of pirates - high risk for high reward - and putting life and limb on the line is just part of the job.
The crabbing season kicks off in October. Captain Sig Hansen, a 30-year veteran and a third generation fisherman, will match his skills against his old rivals, Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie, the Hillstrand brothers of the Time Bandit, and Captain Keith Colburn of the Wizard. The fleet will push hundreds of miles out to sea and fish four hundred feet deep in search of the prized crustaceans. The captains will strategize, and the crews will be pushed to their limits of mental and physical endurance as they repeatedly drop and haul the 700-pound crab pots. Before the season is out, the men will face down huge storms, severe injury, a ticking clock --and each other-- to bring in the King crab harvest.
Three new boats join the fray. The 78-ft Lisa Marie, the smallest boat in the fleet, will battle waves that seem to swallow the vessel. Aboard the Incentive, a team of old salts can't find the crab. While on the Trailblazer, a crew is haunted by a near-fatal incident from a few years ago -- when a man went overboard only to be narrowly saved by Capt. Jonathan Hillstrand.
Working on the Edge: Surviving In the World's Most Dangerous Profession: King Crab Fishing on Alaska's HighSeasNow in paperback, a dramatic insider's account of the world's most dangerous profession: king-crab fishing in the frigid waters of the Bering Sea where the conditions are beyond most imaginations (90 mph Arctic winds, 25-foot seas, and superhuman stretches of on-deck labor). But the payback, if one survives, can be tens of thousands of dollars for a month-long season. Photographs.
